Communal Sololaki is the most charming mid-range stay in Tbilisi, and the original of the small Communal group, which also has hotels in Telavi and Kutaisi. It occupies a restored townhouse with plenty of historic character on Kojori Street, at the top of Sololaki, the old district of grand art nouveau and neo-Moorish houses, galleries, boutiques and wine bars just below Narikala. The 13 rooms come in three sizes, from cosy rooms to large rooms and suites, and they are decorated with saturated jewel colours, chevron floors and twentieth-century furniture from art nouveau to mid-century modern. Every room has a Nespresso machine and its own little Negroni cocktail bar. The day starts with a Georgian breakfast served at one long communal table, which is where the hotel gets its name and its friendly, house-party atmosphere. Expedia gives it an exceptional guest rating of 9.6.
Location and getting around: the hotel is at 6 Kojori Street, a three-minute walk from the National Botanical Garden of Georgia and surrounded by some of Sololaki’s best cafes and wine bars. Freedom Square and Tbilisi City Hall are about ten to fifteen minutes on foot, Rustaveli Avenue about fifteen, and the sulfur baths and the old town are a downhill walk away. Coming back up, the streets are steep, so a short taxi ride helps at the end of a long day. The airport is about half an hour by car.
Rooms: choose a cosy room for a short stay or a large room or suite, some with bathtubs, for more space. The Family Suite has a kitchenette.
Who it suits: couples and design-minded travellers who prefer a small, personal hotel with character over big-hotel facilities. There is no restaurant, gym or pool.
Good to know: breakfast is charged separately unless your rate includes it, room service runs around the clock, and parking is limited, with a car park next door. The hotel lends bikes and vintage scooters, and its terrace overlooks the Botanical Garden.
