Stamba is the hotel that put Tbilisi on the design map, and our splurge pick. It occupies a former publishing house from the 1950s on Kostava Street in Vera, and the conversion keeps the building’s raw concrete, steel and industrial bones while filling it with greenery, vintage furniture, art and books. The lobby is a vast, plant-filled atrium where locals come to work, meet and drink coffee, so the hotel feels like the living room of creative Tbilisi rather than a hushed retreat. Around it has grown a small creative quarter: Lolita, a bar and restaurant across the courtyard, the Radio City diner and workspace, the open-air Mutant Radio cafe, and a farm shop selling produce from a regenerative farm in Kakheti. Expedia lists Stamba as a five-star property with an exceptional guest rating of 9.4.
Location and getting around: Stamba stands at 14 Merab Kostava Street in Vera, one of Tbilisi’s most attractive old residential districts, a two-minute walk from Rustaveli Avenue and five minutes from Rose Revolution Square and Rustaveli metro station. The National Museum and Freedom Square are a pleasant walk or one metro stop away, and the old town, Narikala and the sulfur baths are about ten minutes by taxi. The airport is around half an hour by car, and day tours to Kazbegi, Mtskheta and Kakheti can collect you at the door.
Rooms: room types run from the Aviator rooms, with industrial windows, oak floors and freestanding bathtubs, to terrace rooms with private outdoor space and a suite. The look throughout is warm and textured, with brass, leather, rugs and books.
Who it suits: design lovers, couples on a special trip and anyone who likes to be at the centre of the city’s social scene. The public spaces are lively into the evening, so it is less suited to those seeking total calm.
Good to know: cooked-to-order breakfast is served in the morning for a fee unless your rate includes it, and free self parking is available on site. Rooms Hotel Tbilisi, from the same group, is next door if Stamba is full.
