Zion Canyon Visitor Center

Where every Zion trip begins

The Zion Canyon Visitor Center is where nearly every Zion trip starts, and a little time here pays off. It sits just inside the South Entrance at the lower end of Zion Canyon, a short walk from Springdale. Rangers at the information desk answer questions about trails, weather, flash flood forecasts and current closures; this is the place to ask whether The Narrows is open, how icy the Riverside Walk is, or which trails suit your group. The Wilderness Desk issues permits for backpacking, canyoneering and overnight trips, including walk-in permits for The Subway and other routes when spaces remain. A bookstore run by the park's nonprofit partner sells maps, guidebooks and gifts. Outdoor exhibits around the plaza introduce the canyon's geology, plants and wildlife, and there is drinking water with a bottle-filling station. Shuttle Stop 1 is right outside, and the Springdale shuttle stops a short walk away across the bridge. The parking lot holds more than 350 cars and is free, but it fills early in busy seasons. Two good trails start here: the paved Pa'rus Trail along the river and the Watchman Trail to an overlook above the canyon. A half mile up the road, the Zion Human History Museum tells the story of the people who have lived in and shaped the canyon, from Ancestral Puebloan and Southern Paiute peoples to Mormon pioneers and the early national park, with a 22-minute orientation film and rotating exhibits by regional artists. Its patio frames one of the best views of the Towers of the Virgin.

Seasonal hours. The National Park Service currently lists the visitor center information desk and Wilderness Desk as open from 8am to 5pm, and the museum from 10am to 5pm. The museum is open seasonally from spring to fall, so in the depths of winter it may be closed; check the park's hours page before you plan around it. The Zion Nature Center, used for Junior Ranger activities, is closed for the season. The park itself is open 24 hours a day, year round. At the other end of the park, the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center off Interstate 15 keeps shorter hours with a midday break.

Shuttle and parking strategy. When the Zion Canyon shuttle is running, it is the only way to reach the upper canyon, and lines at Stop 1 can be long in the middle of the day. This fall the shuttle runs daily through November 28, does not run from November 29 to December 25 (when private cars may drive the Scenic Drive), and runs shuttle-only again from December 26 to January 2. Arrive early to park at the visitor center, or park in Springdale and use the town shuttle when it operates. The museum is Shuttle Stop 2, served on the way down-canyon.

How to use it well. Stop at the visitor center on your first morning to check conditions and ask about ranger programs, Junior Ranger books for kids and any closures; recent ones include Hidden Canyon and the trail to Observation Point from the canyon floor, which can now only be reached from the east. Watch the museum film to put the scenery in context, then walk the Pa'rus or Watchman trails, or catch the shuttle up-canyon.
