The Desert Pearl Inn is the Springdale hotel that repeat Zion visitors recommend to their friends: independent, family-built and beautifully sited on the banks of the Virgin River at 707 Zion Park Boulevard, about three-quarters of a mile from the park entrance and within walking distance of the town's restaurants and shops. It has 73 non-smoking rooms and suites, notably spacious by local standards, and most have a private balcony or terrace looking out at the red cliffs that ring the town; poolside rooms face the West Temple. Room types range from King and Double Queen rooms to Premium Kings and the River's Edge Suite, and every category has a convenience kitchen with a wet bar, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker, which makes it easy to pack lunches for long hikes or eat in after a day on the trail. The grounds are a highlight: a large pool yard with a heated outdoor pool, open seasonally, and an outdoor hot tub beside a soothing waterfall, with stone walkways, gardens and a bench at the water's edge. The inn's on-site restaurant, CAMP ZION, saves a drive at dinner, and e-bike rentals are available for exploring the Pa'rus Trail and the Scenic Drive. A free Springdale Line shuttle stop sits right in front of the inn, so you can leave the car parked and ride to the park entrance in minutes. Free WiFi is included. The inn sits at the upper end of mid-range pricing, with peak rates in spring and fall.
The story behind the inn gives it real character. Kent and Robin Palmer bought the land in 1985, and the Desert Pearl received its first guests on June 1, 1998. Kent's family roots run deep in the national parks: his father, Jethro Palmer, was a Cedar City sheep rancher and a tour bus driver for the Utah Parks Company, the railroad subsidiary that brought early tourists to Zion and Bryce, and other family members worked in the parks too. The building reflects that heritage, framed in old-growth Douglas fir and redwood reclaimed from a century-old railroad trestle that once spanned the Great Salt Lake, giving the lobby and rooms a warm, timbered feel unlike anywhere else in town.
Staying well. Ask for a river-facing balcony for the sound of the water, or a poolside room for views of the West Temple. Use the kitchen for breakfast and packed lunches, ride the shuttle from the front door to the park, and come back to the pool or hot tub in the afternoon. E-bikes are a great way to explore the canyon in the shoulder seasons. Book early for spring and fall, when the inn fills months ahead, and look at the quieter winter months for lower rates and an uncrowded canyon.
Who should stay. Families appreciate the space, kitchens and pool; couples enjoy the river setting and balconies; hikers like the shuttle stop and practical rooms. It is not a full-service resort — there is no spa — and the seasonal pool means swimming is a spring-to-fall affair. But for comfortable, characterful rooms, a riverside setting and genuine local roots, the Desert Pearl is one of the best values in Springdale.
