Ghetto and Via Oberdan

Hotel Corona d’Oro

An elegant, quiet four-star hotel in a thirteenth-century palazzo between Piazza Maggiore and the Two Towers, with frescoed ceilings, soundproofed rooms and its own restaurant.

★★★★★

Hotel Corona d’Oro is the choice for travellers who want refined comfort on a calm street in the very centre. It stands on Via Oberdan, a short walk from both Piazza Maggiore and the Two Towers and on the edge of the old Jewish Ghetto, in a palazzo whose origins go back to the thirteenth century. In the fifteenth century it was home to the noble Azzoguidi family, and the building still shows layers of its past: an Art Deco lobby beneath a ceiling with fifteenth and sixteenth-century frescoes of coats of arms and landscapes, and medieval coffered ceilings in the Azzoguidi hall. Rooms and suites are decorated with care and soundproofed, and a patio terrace looks out over the rooftops for an evening aperitivo. Casa Azzoguidi, the in-house restaurant opened in 2021 in a fourteenth-century building next door, serves Italian cooking from breakfast through dinner. Guests can borrow e-bikes for exploring the city.

Location and getting around: Via Oberdan runs north from the Two Towers area towards the university quarter, and the hotel sits at its quiet southern end. Piazza Maggiore, the Quadrilatero and the Neptune Fountain are about five minutes on foot, the university museums and Via Zamboni a little further. The station is around fifteen to twenty minutes’ walk, and an airport shuttle can be arranged for a fee.

The rooms: six room types, from singles to suites, spread over three floors with a lift. Expect classic Italian furnishings, premium bedding and good soundproofing, which matters in a lively university city. Some rooms keep historic ceilings.

Who it suits: couples and culture lovers who want a quiet, elegant base with history, and travellers who appreciate a good in-house restaurant for a relaxed first dinner.

Good to know: breakfast is served daily and is charged separately on some rates, so check when booking. Parking on site is very limited and must be requested in advance; public garages nearby charge a daily fee. Pets are welcome for a fee.
