Costa Rica (San José & Arenal) guide

Where to Stay in San José and Arenal

Where to stay on a San José and Arenal trip: downtown San José or Paseo Colón in the capital, and hot-springs resorts or the volcano road around La Fortuna, with the best hotel for each.

A classic Costa Rica trip needs two bases, and the right choice in each makes a big difference. In San José you want to be central and safe for a night or two; around Arenal you want a volcano view and, ideally, your own hot springs. Here are the main options, matched to the five hotels on this site.

Downtown San José: for sightseeing on foot

The historic centre around Plaza de la Cultura and the pedestrian Avenida Central puts the National Theatre, the Gold Museum and the Central Market within a few minutes’ walk. Gran Hotel Costa Rica, now part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, faces the plaza and is the classic choice, with restored rooms and a restaurant on the square. A block away, Hotel Presidente is the smart-value option, with a rooftop terrace bar, very high guest scores and, rarely for downtown, free parking. Both are ideal for a first or last night and for early tour pickups. The centre is busy by day and quieter at night, so use taxis after dark.

Paseo Colón and La Sabana: for calm and good food

West of downtown, the leafy streets off Paseo Colón are quieter and close to La Sabana Park. Hotel Grano de Oro, a restored Victorian mansion with rooftop hot tubs and one of the city’s best restaurants, is the place for couples and food lovers. It is also convenient for the airport and the road to Arenal, and it has free parking.

The volcano road: for views and value

Most of Arenal’s best hotels line the road that runs west from La Fortuna toward the volcano and the lake. Arenal Manoa and Hot Springs Resort, about seven kilometres from town, has natural hot springs, swim-up bars, free breakfast and terraces facing the cone, at a mid-range price. It is the best all-round base for couples and families with a car.

Hot-springs resorts: for the splurge

If your budget stretches, The Springs Resort and Spa sits on a ridge facing Arenal with more than a dozen thermal pools, five restaurants, a large spa and its own river adventure centre and wildlife sanctuary. Many guests barely leave, and it is the most romantic stay in the region.

La Fortuna town: for walkers and budgets

Staying in town puts restaurants, tour offices and the bus terminal on your doorstep, which suits travellers without a car. Rooms are simpler and views fewer, but tour pickups are quick.

Matching base to trip

For a romantic Arenal splurge, The Springs. For volcano views and hot springs at a fair price, Arenal Manoa. For a characterful night in the capital, Grano de Oro. For sightseeing on foot, Gran Hotel Costa Rica. For the best value downtown, Hotel Presidente.

Practical tips

Book Arenal hotels early for December to April and the Christmas and Easter holidays. Ask for a volcano-facing room, since it is the reason to stay on the volcano road. If you plan to drive, choose hotels with free parking, and collect your rental car on the day you leave San José, not the day you arrive.
