Doha is a spread-out city built around the car, so where you stay shapes your days more than in most places. The good news is that the main sights cluster around the bay: Souq Waqif, Msheireb, the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar all sit near the southern end of the Corniche, while the West Bay towers and Katara rise to the north. The metro and cheap taxis fill the gaps. Here are the areas that work best for a first visit, and the hotel we would pick in each.
Msheireb Downtown: for walkability
Msheireb is the regenerated heart of old Doha, with shaded streets, the great square of Barahat Msheireb, the free Msheireb Museums and the metro station where all three lines meet. Souq Waqif is next door, so you can walk to dinner, which is rare in Doha. Our splurge is Mandarin Oriental, Doha, right on the square, with a celebrated spa, the Aqua rooftop bar and restaurants including IZU and Liang. For a stylish stay at a gentler price, Alwadi Hotel Doha, an MGallery hotel on the corner of Wadi Musheireb, is steps from the souq and has a rooftop lounge, a pool and a spa.
Souq Waqif: for atmosphere
Staying inside the souq means falling asleep to the sound of the lanes and walking out to karak tea in the morning. Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli is a group of small heritage hotels spread through the market, with traditional Arabian decor, an outdoor pool and a boutique spa with a Moroccan hammam. It is the most characterful stay in the city. Rooms vary between the buildings, and evenings can be noisy, but the setting is unique.
West Bay and the Corniche: for the beach and skyline
West Bay is the district of glass towers at the northern end of the Corniche, with many of the city’s big hotels, the metro Red Line and quick access to Katara and The Pearl. It suits beach lovers, families and business travellers. The Sheraton Grand Doha, the landmark pyramid at the end of the Corniche, has a 400-metre private beach, pools, a seawater lagoon and a kids club, with balconies in every room. It is a taxi ride to the souq, but the Corniche walk starts at the door.
Education City: for value
West of the centre, Education City is a campus district of universities and striking buildings such as the Qatar National Library. It is quiet and far from the souq, but rates are lower. Premier Inn Doha Education City is a reliable budget choice with a pool, a gym, family rooms and free covered parking, about a kilometre from the library and close to a tram stop. It works best if you have a car or do not mind taxi rides.
Matching base to trip
For a luxury break, choose Mandarin Oriental. For character, the Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels. For the best value in the centre, Alwadi Hotel Doha. For a beach and a family holiday, the Sheraton Grand. For a tight budget, the Premier Inn.
Practical tips
Rates are highest in the cool season and during major events, so book early for winter trips. Check whether breakfast is included and whether the hotel has a licence to serve alcohol if that matters to you. Ask about airport transfers, and remember that taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy and inexpensive, so a slightly farther hotel need not be a problem.
