Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli is a group of small hotels in restored heritage buildings spread through the souq itself, so you step out of the door into the lanes, the spice stalls and the cafés. Each has its own character and name, including Al Bidda, Al Jasra, Al Jomrok, Mirqab, Arumaila, Musheireb, Najd and Bismillah, described as Doha’s oldest hotel. Rooms are decorated in a traditional Arabian style, with carved wood, lanterns and rich fabrics, and the hotels share facilities. There is an outdoor swimming pool, Mirqab has a courtyard pool, and the boutique spa includes a Moroccan hammam. Several food and drink outlets, from Arabic lounges to rooftop dining, are part of the group. The airport is about fifteen minutes away, and the Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art and Msheireb are all a short walk or ride.

Living in it: the souq is at its best late in the evening and early in the morning, and staying here lets you enjoy both. It is the choice for travellers who want character over towers.

Trade-offs: rooms and facilities vary between the individual hotels, so check which one you are booked into. Some rooms are small, the lanes can be noisy at night, and there is no beach.
