Ski Dubai

Real snow and penguins in the middle of the desert

Ski Dubai is the attraction that sums up the city's attitude better than any skyscraper: a real ski slope, covered in real snow and kept below freezing all year, built inside Mall of the Emirates on Sheikh Zayed Road, a few kilometers from beaches where the sea can be warmer than a bath. It opened in 2005, long before indoor snow became a trend elsewhere, and it is still one of the largest indoor ski areas in the world. You see it first through the glass from the mall's food court and cafes, a white slope tilting down inside a huge silver tube that is visible from the motorway. There are two ways to visit. The Snow Park is for everyone: a large flat and gently sloping area with toboggan and tube runs, ice slides, a small climbing and play zone, snowball fights, and a cafe serving hot chocolate in a room full of people in hired jackets. The slope is for skiers and snowboarders, with several runs of different gradients, a quad chairlift and a tow lift, and lessons for complete beginners. Then there are the penguins, gentoo and king penguins that live in their own enclosure at the resort, with short encounter sessions where small groups meet them up close, and a free penguin march on certain sessions. Jackets, trousers, boots and helmets are usually part of the ticket; gloves and hats are not always included, so bring them or buy them at the shop. The temperature sits a few degrees below zero, which feels glorious on a hot afternoon and surprisingly cold after an hour. Fit: families with children, groups of friends, anyone who has never seen snow, and skiers curious enough to tick off a run in the desert.

The engineering is the point of the place. The slope is a long, inclined box insulated from the desert outside, with snow made fresh overnight and the air kept cold by a chiller system that runs around the clock; it is one of the most visible statements of Dubai's ambition to have everything, everywhere, all year. That also makes it a useful plan B: when the summer heat closes the outdoor attractions, or a winter day turns hazy and windy, Ski Dubai runs exactly as usual. The mall itself has been in the middle of a large refurbishment announced in 2025, so expect some changes to the shops and walkways around the entrance, but the snow keeps going.

How to do it well: choose your ticket before you go. Snow Park passes cover the play area and rides, with higher tiers adding unlimited rides or a penguin encounter; slope passes are timed, and first-timers should book a beginner lesson, because the instructors decide who is ready for the chairlift. Book penguin encounters ahead in the cool season and on weekends, when they sell out. Wear warm socks, bring gloves, and plan around two to three hours for the Snow Park with children; keen skiers can spend longer. Go on a weekday morning for the emptiest slope. Afterwards, warm up with lunch in the mall, which also has a good food court and many restaurants.

Getting there is easy: Mall of the Emirates station on the Red Line of the metro connects directly to the mall by a covered bridge, and taxis drop at the main entrances. From the Marina it is about fifteen minutes; from Downtown around twenty-five. Combine it with a beach afternoon, or with Aquaventure on the Palm for a day of extremes, or simply use it to cool down between sightseeing stops. It is not a substitute for a real ski holiday, and it is not cheap by Dubai standards, but nobody leaves without a story.

Good questions

Do we need our own warm clothes?+

Jackets, trousers, boots and helmets are usually included with the ticket. Gloves and hats are not always included, so bring your own or buy them at the shop by the entrance. Warm socks make a big difference.

Can complete beginners ski at Ski Dubai?+

Yes. Book a beginner lesson; the instructors teach on the gentle lower area and decide when you are ready for the chairlift and the main runs.

What is there for non-skiers?+

The Snow Park has toboggan and tube runs, ice slides, snow play areas and a cafe, and the penguin encounters are a highlight for all ages.

How cold is it inside?+

It is kept a few degrees below zero all year. It feels wonderful for the first hour on a hot day, and properly cold after that if you are not dressed for it.

How do we get there?+

Take the Red Line metro to Mall of the Emirates station, which connects to the mall by a covered bridge. A taxi from the Marina takes about fifteen minutes.
