IMG Worlds of Adventure

A full day of rides under one air-conditioned roof

IMG Worlds of Adventure is a theme park under one enormous roof, which in Dubai is exactly the point: it opened in 2016 in City of Arabia, off Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road on the inland side of the city, and it is among the largest indoor theme parks in the world, so the rides and shows run at a comfortable temperature whatever the weather is doing outside. The park is divided into zones, each themed by a licensed brand or a big idea. The Marvel zone has the headline thrills, with rides built around the Avengers and Spider-Man and an indoor coaster, and comic-book streets where costumed characters appear for photos. The Cartoon Network zone is designed for younger children, with gentle rides and characters from the channel's shows. Lost Valley, the dinosaur zone, is the most atmospheric, with life-size animatronic dinosaurs in a jungle setting and the park's fastest roller coaster ripping through it. IMG Boulevard, a street of shops and restaurants, holds a haunted hotel walk-through that is genuinely scary. Throughout the year the park also runs seasonal events, such as a Halloween-season Haunted Town and a winter event, which change the decor and add shows. Tickets are for a full day, with fast-track upgrades available at busy times. Expect a long day on your feet, food at theme-park prices and a lot of noise, and plan a taxi there and back, because no metro line reaches it. Fit: families with children of all ages, teenagers, and groups who want a day of rides when the beach is too hot or too windy.

The appeal is simple and practical. Dubai's outdoor theme parks are best in the cool season, and even then the afternoon sun can be fierce, whereas IMG runs the same day in July as in January. It is also a reasonable choice in the shoulder months when the outdoor parks reopen and close, or on the rare days of rain and dust. The scale of the building is part of the experience; you walk in from the car park into a huge dark hall lit like a city at night, with the zones arranged around it.

How to do it well: arrive at opening, head first to the Lost Valley coaster and the Marvel thrill rides while queues are short, then work back toward the gentler rides and shows. Check height restrictions for the big rides before you promise anything to a small child. Weekends and public holidays are the busiest days; on those days a fast-track ticket can save hours. The haunted walk-through is not suitable for young children or the easily frightened, and some rides use strobe lighting. Bring a light layer, since the air-conditioning is strong, and a refillable bottle.

Getting there: City of Arabia is about twenty-five to thirty minutes by taxi from Downtown and longer from the Marina, depending on traffic; ride-hailing apps work well, and some tickets can be bundled with a transfer. Allow a full day. It pairs well with a morning at the Dubai Frame or an evening at Global Village, which is in the same inland direction, or with Dubai Safari Park in the cooler months for a family-focused couple of days.

Good questions

Is IMG Worlds of Adventure really all indoors?+

Yes. The whole park is inside one air-conditioned building, which is why it operates year-round and is one of the best options in the summer heat.

Is it suitable for young children?+

Yes. The Cartoon Network zone is designed for younger children, and there are gentle rides in other zones too, but the big coasters have height limits and the haunted attraction is not suitable for little ones.

How do we get there without a car?+

There is no metro station nearby, so take a taxi or ride-hailing car. Allow twenty-five to thirty minutes from Downtown, more from the Marina. Some tickets include a transfer.

Is the fast-track ticket worth it?+

On weekends, public holidays and during seasonal events it can save a lot of queuing. On quiet weekdays the standard ticket is usually enough.

Are there seasonal events?+

Yes. The park runs seasonal events through the year, such as a Halloween-season haunted town and a winter event, which add shows and change the decor. Check the dates when you book.
