Periyar Tiger Reserve and Thekkady

Elephants, deer and a boat on the lake

Periyar Tiger Reserve is Kerala’s best-known wildlife destination, a 925 square kilometre reserve in the Western Ghats centred on a lake that formed after the Mullaperiyar Dam was built across the Periyar River in 1895. Kerala Tourism says the Travancore kings used the area for hunting, that it became a game sanctuary in 1934 and was later included in Project Tiger. The reserve has over 35 mammal species and over 265 bird species, with the tiger population estimated at around 40, and elephants visit the lake to drink and cool off, especially in summer. A boat ride on the lake is the classic way to see gaur and sambar deer, and the reserve also offers bamboo rafting, trekking and camping, plus watch towers and nearby tea, cardamom, pepper and coffee plantations. Tigers are very rarely seen, so go for the landscape and the elephants.

How to visit

The base is Thekkady, in Idukki district, and the reserve is a long drive from Kochi and Munnar. The Kerala Tourism page says reservations for watch towers are made at the Forest Information Centre in Thekkady. The state tourism corporation runs lake boat cruises with several departures a day from early morning to mid-afternoon, tickets priced at a few hundred rupees per person with a separate forest entry fee, and a rule that you must reach the boat landing about 30 minutes early.

The parking area is some distance from the landing, so allow time. Confirmed boat tickets are generally non-refundable.

What to expect

The cruise is slow and quiet, so you scan the shoreline for elephants, gaur, sambar and birds, and the early boats offer the best light and animal activity. Sightings vary by season and water level, and in the dry months animals gather at the lake. Keep noise down, wear neutral colours and carry binoculars, water and a light waterproof. Other activities such as bamboo rafting and guided treks need advance booking at the forest office and are controlled for safety and conservation.

Making the most of it

Stay overnight in Thekkady so you can take an early boat and avoid the midday rush. Pair the reserve with a spice plantation visit, which is a Thekkady speciality, and consider a guided trek if you want to go beyond the lake. Check the current boat timetable and ticket rules before you travel, since they can change. If wildlife is your main goal, adjust expectations: Periyar rewards patience, and elephants and deer are far more likely than tigers.
