Where to Stay in Lyon

How to choose your base in Lyon, from a five-star palace in the old Hôtel-Dieu to a classic hotel on Place Bellecour, a school-themed boutique in Vieux Lyon, a design hotel on the Rhône and a lively budget pick in the 7th.

Lyon is compact enough that almost any central hotel puts the main sights within a 20-minute walk or a few metro stops. The real choice is about atmosphere: the grand squares of the Presqu’île, the Renaissance lanes of Vieux Lyon across the Saône, or the left bank of the Rhône, where prices ease and the city feels more local. Here are the areas that work best, and the hotel we would pick in each.

The Presqu’île: for first-timers

The peninsula between the two rivers is the heart of the city, with Place Bellecour, the shopping streets, the Opera and the riverside quays, and it is a few minutes on foot from both Vieux Lyon and the left bank. Bellecour station on metro lines A and D connects you to everything. For a splurge, the InterContinental Lyon - Hotel Dieu fills the restored 18th-century hospital on the Rhône, with river-view rooms, a spa and Le Dôme, the cocktail bar beneath its great dome. For classic elegance, Hotel Le Royal Lyon - MGallery has watched over Place Bellecour since 1912, with 72 traditional rooms and Yannick Alléno’s PAVYLLON restaurant. The trade-off is traffic and higher prices, especially in December, when the Fête des Lumières centres on these streets.

Vieux Lyon: for atmosphere

Staying in the old town means stepping out into the cobbled lanes, the traboules and the bouchons, with the funicular to Fourvière at the end of the street. It is the most romantic choice, and quietest in the early morning. The Collège Hôtel on Place Saint-Paul is our pick: a witty four-star boutique on a back-to-school theme, with calm white rooms, some with balconies or terraces, and private parking, rare in the old town. Expect weekend noise near the bars and uneven cobbles with luggage.

The left bank, 6th: for food and trains

Across the Rhône, the elegant 6th arrondissement offers good restaurants, the riverside promenades and easy access to Les Halles Paul Bocuse and Part-Dieu station. OKKO Hotels Lyon Pont Lafayette, now marketed as OKKO Lyon Centre, sits opposite the bridge of the same name, with compact design-led rooms and a 24-hour Club lounge with snacks, and the Presqu’île a short walk across the water. It has no car park, so it suits train travellers best.

The 7th: for value

South of the Guillotière, the 7th is residential, student-friendly and well connected by metro and tram. Mama Shelter Lyon is the budget pick, a playful hotel conceived with Philippe Starck, with a busy restaurant and bar, a car park and metro line B at Jean Macé. You give up a postcard address for lower prices and a local feel.

Matching base to trip

For a special occasion, choose the InterContinental. For first-timers who want everything on foot, Le Royal on Bellecour. For romance and old-town charm, the Collège Hôtel. For a train-based or food-focused trip, OKKO. For a budget stay or a road trip, Mama Shelter.

Practical tips

Book months ahead for the Fête des Lumières in early December, when rates soar and the best rooms go first. Most of these hotels charge breakfast separately, so check your rate. If you are driving, confirm parking before you arrive, as central streets are busy and many hotels rely on public garages. A local tourist tax is added per person per night.
