Montevideo stretches along the river for many kilometres, so where you stay shapes your trip more than in most small capitals. The sights are concentrated in the old town and centre, the lifestyle is on the Rambla in the beach districts, and the airport and luxury resort sit to the east. Here is how the main areas compare and which of our five hotels fits each.
Centro and Plaza Independencia: the sightseeing base
If you want to walk to the main sights, stay by the plaza. The Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza is a five-star tower on the square, with an indoor pool, spa, restaurants and a casino, and it puts the Teatro Solís, the Palacio Salvo and Ciudad Vieja within a few minutes on foot. The trade-off is that the old town is quiet in the evenings and on Sundays, so you will use taxis for dinner in other districts. It suits first-timers, families and travellers who value walking to sights.
The waterfront near Ciudad Vieja: the budget base
The ibis Montevideo Rambla is a three-star facing the river on Calle La Cumparsita, a short drive from the Mercado del Puerto and the old town. Rooms are simple and air conditioned, with a restaurant, a 24-hour café and secure parking for a fee. It is the best-value choice, especially for early ferries and day trips, though the immediate streets are functional rather than charming, so use taxis at night.
Punta Carretas and Pocitos: the relaxed residential base
East of the centre, these neighbourhoods have the beach, the Rambla, a shopping mall, many restaurants and a calm, safe feel. The Mercure Montevideo Punta Carretas is a four-star on the Rambla, 150 metres from the mall, with a restaurant and gym but no pool. The Dazzler by Wyndham Montevideo sits nearby on 21 de Setiembre, with a seasonal outdoor pool, a spa, a terrace garden and a free breakfast buffet. Both are mid-range and suit couples, families and visitors who want evenings out by the water. Expect a taxi or bus of fifteen to twenty minutes to Ciudad Vieja.
Carrasco: the luxury and airport base
Carrasco is the leafy, upscale district near the airport. The Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa stands beside the beach, with indoor and seasonal outdoor pools, a full spa, a fine-dining restaurant and a casino. It is ideal for honeymoons, special occasions and early flights, and it is a short drive to wineries on the edge of the city such as Bouza. The trade-off is distance: the old town is about half an hour by car.
Choosing quickly
Short stay focused on history and sights: the Radisson. Tight budget or ferry connections: the ibis. Beach evenings, restaurants and a calm base: the Dazzler or the Mercure, choosing the Dazzler for a pool and free breakfast. Luxury and spa: the Sofitel. Whatever you choose, rooms and rates change by season, with December to February the most expensive and busiest, and November a good-value shoulder month. Ask about parking and breakfast when booking, and remember that most sightseeing and day trips, including Colonia and Punta del Este, can be done from any of these bases.
