Nairobi is a large, spread-out city with heavy traffic, so where you stay shapes your trip more than in most capitals. Think about what you will do: if your days are about the national park and the Lang’ata sights, stay south; if you want restaurants and nightlife, stay in Westlands; if you want calm and greenery, head north to Gigiri. Here is how the city breaks down, with the hotel we recommend in each area.
City centre: for history and character
The northern edge of the Central Business District, near the university and the National Theatre, is where Nairobi began. It is convenient for the National Museum and for safari pickups, which often start from central hotels, but it is busy, and you should use cars rather than walk after dark.
Fairmont The Norfolk is the splurge and our top pick, a landmark since 1904 with 170 rooms around tropical gardens, an outdoor pool, a spa and the famous Lord Delamere Terrace. Ask for a garden-facing room, and enjoy the free parking.
Westlands: for restaurants, rooftops and nightlife
Westlands, north-west of the centre, is the city’s liveliest district, packed with shopping centres, bars and restaurants. The Nairobi Expressway gives it fast access to the airport.
Sankara Nairobi, Autograph Collection is the stylish five-star choice, with a heated rooftop pool beside the Sarabi bar and the Graze steakhouse downstairs. It suits couples and business travellers who want to walk to dinner.
ibis Styles Nairobi Westlands is the budget pick on Rhapta Road, a bright design hotel with compact rooms, a rooftop bar with skyline views and a roast house. Rooms are small and there is no pool, but it is clean, cheerful and close to everything in Westlands.
Gigiri: for calm and greenery
Gigiri in the north is the diplomatic quarter, home to the UN offices and many embassies, with wide leafy streets and Karura Forest nearby. It is quieter than Westlands and further from the southern sights.
Tribe Hotel is the design-led choice here, beside The Village Market, with 128 spacious rooms, the Jiko restaurant, the Kaya Spa, a pool and a rooftop bar. It suits couples, families and business visitors who want a peaceful base with shops and restaurants on the doorstep.
Mombasa Road and the national park: for wildlife and flights
The southern edge of the city, along Mombasa Road beside Nairobi National Park, is the most convenient area for the airport and for an early start at the park, the Sheldrick nursery and the Giraffe Centre.
Emara Ole-Sereni is the mid-range pick, with park-view rooms that look out over the plains, a rooftop infinity pool and a steakhouse, about 12 kilometres from the airport. Book a park-view room; it is a wonderful first or last night of a safari.
Which area is right for you?
Choose the city centre for history and easy safari pickups. Choose Westlands for food, nightlife and value. Choose Gigiri for calm and Karura Forest. Choose Mombasa Road for the national park and the airport. Wherever you stay, use ride-hail apps to get around, and plan your sightseeing by area to avoid long hours in traffic.
