Millennium Cross and Mount Vodno

Skopje's great viewpoint and its most recognisable landmark

The Millennium Cross stands on Mount Vodno above Skopje and is the most recognisable structure in the capital. At 66 metres tall, it is built as a lattice cross in the traditional Christian shape, often compared to the Eiffel Tower, and rests on a platform of twelve columns representing the twelve apostles. The site was known in Ottoman times as Krstovar, the place of the cross. The monument was dedicated in August 2002, an elevator was installed inside the cross in September 2018, and construction was completed in 2019, when a restaurant and souvenir shop opened beside it. At night the cross is covered in thousands of lights and is visible across much of the city. The view from its base and its viewing level is the best way to understand Skopje's layout: the Vardar Valley, the Fortress, the old town, the new centre and the mountains beyond. A cable car from the foot of Vodno to the summit area opened in 2011, built by Doppelmayr, with a ride of about six to eight minutes, and the ropeway does not run on Mondays or the last Tuesday of each month. Many visitors reach the cross on a half-day tour that also visits Matka Canyon, which is easy and efficient, while keen walkers climb the mountain on foot.

Why it matters: the cross gives the view that makes the city make sense, and it shows how Skopje sits in a bowl of mountains. It is also a modern landmark with strong feelings attached, so it rewards a little context. The cross is part religious monument, part viewpoint, and part symbol of the capital, and you will see it from almost everywhere.

Working the visit: if you go independently, the cable car is the simplest way up, but check that it is running on the day, as winter and weather can change operations. The tour we link is a group half-day trip of about six hours that combines the cross with Matka Canyon and a traditional village, with transport included, and it has a large number of reviews. A taxi to the summit area is another option. Allow time for the observation level, the cafe and photographs.

Good to know: it is colder and windier on the summit than in the city, so bring a jacket, and visibility can be poor in fog or low cloud, so choose a clear day. In November the days are short, which means the lit cross is visible early in the evening from the city below. If you want the view with dinner, the restaurant beside the cross is an option, but check opening times. Pair this with Skopje Fortress for the old-town view from below and with Matka Canyon for the green gorge.
