Caro Hotel

A 26-room five-star hotel in the former palace of the Marqués de Caro, a short walk from the cathedral, where restoration uncovered centuries of the city’s history inside the walls.

★★★★★

Caro Hotel is the most characterful luxury address in Valencia’s old town. It occupies the former palace and private mansion of the Marqués de Caro on Calle Almirante, in the quiet Seu-Xerea quarter a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral. When the building was restored, layers of Valencia’s past came to light, and rather than hide them the designers made them the decor: a stretch of the twelfth-century Arab city wall is displayed in the restaurant, and old stone, arches and fragments sit alongside sleek modern furniture throughout. With only 26 rooms, including a suite, it feels intimate and calm. The Xanglot restaurant serves creative Mediterranean cooking and is recognised in the Michelin Guide’s hotel selection.

Location and getting around: Calle Almirante is a narrow street in the old town, close to the cathedral, the Plaza de la Virgen and the Turia Gardens, so almost every central sight is within a 15-minute walk. The Turia is just north of the hotel, which makes it easy to rent a bike and ride to the City of Arts and Sciences or Bioparc. Taxis can reach the door, and the airport is around 25 minutes away by car.

The rooms: each room is different because of the historic shell, with high ceilings, exposed stone or archaeological details in some, and a restrained palette of greys, whites and wood. Beds are excellent, bathrooms are modern, and the quietest rooms face away from the street. The suite is the one to choose for a special occasion.

Who it suits and good to know: couples and travellers who value design, history and calm over big-hotel facilities. Breakfast is a highlight, served in the restaurant beside the old walls. Parking is available through the hotel at a charge, which is useful because driving in the old town is tricky. Book early for Fallas in March and for spring weekends, when the small room count sells out fast.
