★★★★★

Hotel Las Arenas Balneario Resort is Valencia’s classic seaside grand hotel. It stands on the beachfront promenade at Las Arenas, the city beach just north of the port, and it grew out of the Balneario Las Arenas, a seaside bathing establishment founded in 1898 whose elegant white buildings still frame the resort. The hotel is rated five-star Gran Lujo by the regional tourism authority and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. It has 253 rooms, including ten suites, set around gardens and pools facing the sea, along with a spa, a gym, restaurants and a café. It is the place in Valencia to combine city sightseeing with real beach-resort time.

Location and getting around: the hotel faces the sand on the promenade of Las Arenas, at the southern end of the long beach that continues as Malvarrosa. The fishermen’s quarter of El Cabanyal, with its tiled houses and traditional rice restaurants, is right behind it. The old town is about 15 to 20 minutes away by taxi, and the tram and buses along the seafront connect to the metro for the city centre. The City of Arts and Sciences is a short taxi ride.

The rooms: rooms are classic and spacious, with many facing the sea or the gardens and pools; it is worth paying for a sea view. Suites suit families or longer stays, and the historic buildings give parts of the hotel a period feel.

Who it suits and good to know: couples and families who want a beach holiday with the city close by, and anyone visiting in the warm months. Breakfast is a generous buffet. Parking is available, which is a plus if you plan day trips by car. In November the beach is quiet but the spa and the promenade walks make it a relaxing winter break; check which pools are open in the cooler months.
