Where to Stay in Yerevan

A guide to choosing where to stay in Yerevan, from Republic Square and Abovyan Street to Northern Avenue, with five hotels from a hostel to a luxury spa hotel.

Yerevan is small enough that almost any central address works, and nearly all visitors stay in Kentron, the central district. The real choice is between the grand square, the pedestrian avenues and the quieter streets, and between luxury, mid-range and budget. Here is how the five hotels in our list fit the city.

Republic Square: the classic base

The square is the formal heart of Yerevan, ringed by the government buildings, museums and the metro station. The Armenia Marriott Hotel Yerevan sits directly on it at 1 King Pap Street, in a heritage building that has been part of city life since 1958. It is the easiest choice for a first visit: you can walk to the Cascade, the Opera and the cafe streets, the Republic Square metro is beside the hotel, and it has two restaurants, a 24-hour fitness center and an airport shuttle for a fee. Request a higher floor if you are a light sleeper, because the square can be busy on event evenings.

Abovyan Street: elegant and central

A short walk away, The Alexander, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is at 3/4 Abovyan Street and is the city's top luxury address, with 114 rooms and suites, an indoor pool, a spa with a hammam and a top-floor Italian restaurant. It suits couples and special trips, and it is a very comfortable place to recover after a long day trip. Expect the highest rates in the city. The hotel does not run an airport shuttle, so pre-book a transfer.

Northern Avenue: walkable and good value

The ibis Yerevan Center is at Northern Avenue 5/1, on a pedestrian street that links Republic Square with the Opera area. With 255 compact rooms, a veranda restaurant, a 24-hour bar and a well-rated breakfast, it is a sensible mid-range choice. Its page lists the Opera, Republic Square, the Matenadaran and the Cascade among nearby sights, so you can leave transport behind.

Central and quieter: modern comfort

Mövenpick Yerevan, at Mher Mkrtchyan 15, is a modern five-star with 127 rooms, a spa with hammam and sauna, a French-leaning restaurant and a two-floor car park. It is not directly on the square, so evenings are calmer, and the parking helps if you plan to rent a car for the countryside. It suits couples, wellness lovers and business travellers.

Budget: a hostel by the square

Kantar Hostel at 10 Deghatan Street is about three minutes on foot from Republic Square, with four- and eight-bed dorms, women-only rooms, a private double with shared bathroom, free breakfast and free parking. It is the best value for backpackers and solo travellers, and the reception can help with group tours.

How to decide

For a first visit, choose the Marriott for the square or the ibis for value. For a splurge, choose the Alexander. For spa and parking, choose Mövenpick. For the lowest cost, choose Kantar. If you plan several early starts for day trips, a central address saves time, because most tours pick up in the centre. Whichever you choose, ask the hotel about luggage storage and early breakfast on tour mornings, and confirm any airport transfer before you arrive.
