★★★★★

Kanab is the hub of southern Utah's canyon country, and the Best Western Red Hills puts you right in the middle of it. The hotel stands at 125 West Center Street in downtown Kanab, a walkable small town known as Little Hollywood for the hundreds of Western films and TV shows shot in the surrounding red-rock landscapes. Within about a third of a mile are the Little Hollywood Museum and the Kanab Heritage House Museum, and the Rocking V Cafe sits right next door, with more restaurants a short stroll away. Rooms are spacious and well appointed, with options that include jetted tubs, kitchens or kitchenettes and some rooms with views of the red cliffs. A free hot breakfast is served daily, with a waffle station, eggs and fresh fruit, and the heated outdoor pool and fitness center help you recover after long days of hiking. Wi-Fi is free throughout. The hotel is dog friendly, allowing up to two dogs in a limited number of rooms with a weight limit and a nightly fee, and other pets may be approved in advance. The hotel has earned TripAdvisor awards for its service and cleanliness. From here, Zion's East Entrance is roughly 30 miles away, Bryce Canyon about 80 miles, Coral Pink Sand Dunes a short drive west, and the seasonal North Rim of the Grand Canyon about the same distance as Bryce to the south.

Why stay in Kanab. Kanab sits at the crossroads of US-89 and US-89A, which makes it an excellent hub for a multi-park road trip. In a single stay you can visit Zion's east side, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, the Grand Staircase-Escalante backcountry, and the slot canyons around the Utah-Arizona border, and Page, Arizona, with Lake Powell and the Antelope Canyon area, is about an hour and a quarter east. The town also has a Bureau of Land Management visitor center for the surrounding monuments and the Vermilion Cliffs, and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary lies just north of town. Kanab has more dining, fuel and supermarket options than Springdale or Mount Carmel Junction.

Room advice. Request a room with a view of the red cliffs, a jetted-tub room for a couples stay, or a kitchenette room if you plan to cook. Dog owners should book early, as pet rooms are limited. The pool is outdoors and heated, but check if it is open during winter visits.

Who should stay. Road-trippers covering several parks, families who want a pool and free breakfast, dog owners and film buffs. Kanab is not the best base for daily trips into Zion Canyon itself, which is more than an hour away when the shuttle is running; for that, stay in Springdale. For a loop through southern Utah and northern Arizona, the Red Hills is an excellent, reliable choice.
