AlUla Old Town

A thousand-year-old maze of mud-brick lanes, free to explore

AlUla Old Town is a walled settlement of narrow alleys and mud-brick houses that grew on the incense route and the pilgrim road from Damascus to Makkah. It dates back around a thousand years and has about fourteen gates and a hilltop fort with a lookout. Today the old houses hold cafés, craft shops, galleries and restaurants, and the lanes are pedestrian only, so the pace is slow. The destination’s own website says Old Town is free and open to all, that most of it opens between eight and nine in the morning, and that it gets busier after three in the afternoon, with shops open until about eleven at night and most restaurants until about one in the morning.

Why it matters

Old Town is the living, walkable counterpart to Hegra and Dadan, which are sealed archaeological sites. It shows how people actually lived in the oasis, in clay-and-stone houses with palm-wood beams, and it is the best place to eat, shop and sit in a café after a day of tours. A Place of Remembrance, an immersive heritage exhibit, and Old Town Market Street are both part of the quarter.

How to visit

Parking is free at the South Parking or the larger North Parking in AlJadidah, with shuttles to the entrance, because the old streets are pedestrian only. Walking the lanes is free. For context, the destination offers a guided storytelling walk of around ninety minutes with a local guide for a modest per-person fee, and a twilight walk linking Old Town and the Oasis that is scheduled from 30 October to 12 December 2026. Book the guided walks ahead in winter.

When to go

Come in the late afternoon, wander as the light softens, and stay for dinner when the lanes light up. Mornings are quiet but many shops are not open yet. Dress modestly, in loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, as in the rest of Saudi Arabia.
