Harrat Viewpoint

A free volcanic-ridge lookout over the oasis

Harrat Viewpoint sits at the summit of Harrat Uwayrid, a volcanic mountain in a lava field, at 1,219 metres above sea level. From the edge you can see the whole oasis, Dadan, Old Town and the wider valley laid out below, and it is a popular place to watch the sunset. The destination’s own website says entry is free, no booking is needed and it is open from the afternoon until late in the evening. There is comfortable sofa seating and fire pits for warmth as night falls, telescopes for stargazing, free parking and a wood-fired pizzeria. It suits all ages, and it is a calm contrast to the day tours.

Why it matters

Most AlUla sights look at the cliffs from the bottom. Harrat Viewpoint looks down from the top, so you get a sense of how the green oasis sits in the middle of an enormous desert. In the evening the valley lights come on, and the telescopes make it a casual stargazing spot with no special booking.

How to visit

It is about thirty minutes by car from Old Town. You can drive yourself, or join a group tour, because many tours include it as a stop. Facilities include sofa seating, fire pits, free parking and Pizza Bar IOI, which serves wood-fired pizza, pasta and salads. Hours are afternoon to late evening, so plan to arrive before sunset and stay for the stars.

Plan around

Nights are cool and windy on the ridge, even when the days are warm, so bring a jacket and a hat. If you only have time for one sunset in AlUla, choose between this and Elephant Rock: Elephant Rock for the landmark and food trucks, Harrat for the panorama and the quiet.
