Maraya Concert Hall

A mirrored cube that disappears into the desert

Maraya, Arabic for mirror, is a cube of reflective glass set into Ashar Valley, about twenty minutes by car from central AlUla. Its shell is made of 9,740 mirrored panels that reflect the surrounding sandstone and sky so completely that the building almost vanishes in daylight. It is described as the largest mirrored building in the world and holds a Guinness World Record. Inside is a 500-seat auditorium with a 26-metre floor-to-ceiling facade that can open onto the valley, and it is a venue for concerts and cultural events. For most visitors the experience is the building from the outside, the reflections and the photographs.

Why it matters

Maraya is the clearest example of how AlUla mixes ancient and contemporary culture. It was designed to sit lightly in the landscape, and the reflections change with the hour, turning from pale sky in the morning to deep orange as the sun sets. If you have been to Hegra, it is a vivid contrast of old rock and new glass.

How to visit

The destination’s own website says there is currently no access to the inside of Maraya, though you can see and photograph the exterior, and it also lists a Maraya Tour. Concerts have drawn well-known performers, so check the events calendar for dates and tickets, which usually sell out. The self-guided Hegra and Maraya tour linked here bundles tickets for Hegra with a visit to Maraya, which is a convenient way to see both on one half-day. Check inclusions on the booking page before you go.

Plan around

Late afternoon gives the best reflections and the cooler air. Wear sunglasses, because the glare can be strong, and bring a hat. Maraya is a good stop on the way to or from the Ashar Valley hotels and the rock-art trail nearby.
