Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is the blue-washed mountain town of Morocco's Rif, a small medina tucked against steep limestone peaks where almost every lane, stair and doorway is painted in shades of blue and white.

This guide stays in and around the town: the medina and its crafts, the old kasbah and ethnographic museum on Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the Ras el-Maa spring at the edge of the old town, and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint above it, where visitors gather for sunset. Beyond the walls we pick the best local hiking, from the Akchour waterfalls and God's Bridge to a two-day trek through Talassemtane National Park, plus a photo walk and a home cooking class. Fes and Tangier have their own guides with day trips, so we focus on what to do once you are here, with ten places to stay within walking distance of the main square.
