Where to Stay in Chefchaouen

A neighbourhood guide to Chefchaouen hotels, from a spa riad in the Andalusian quarter to a family guest house on the main avenue, tied to the places we recommend.

Chefchaouen is compact, so almost every hotel is within a short walk of the main sights, but the differences are real. Inside the medina you trade vehicle access for atmosphere, near the kasbah you get the shortest walk to everything, and on the avenue you gain parking and a quieter night. Here is how our choices fit those areas.

Beside the kasbah: the shortest walk

Staying near Plaza Uta el-Hammam puts the kasbah, the Grand Mosque, cafes and the souks within a minute or two. Hotel Dar Mounir is the budget pick in the Souika district, about a minute from the square, with a large terrace, a restaurant and a free breakfast buffet. It has no parking, so it suits people arriving by bus or taxi. Vancii Hotel is the mid-range choice about two minutes from the kasbah, with 56 rooms, mountain-view rooms, two restaurants, a rooftop terrace and free cooked-to-order breakfast.

Edge of the medina with a pool: Hotel Parador

Hotel Parador occupies the former Spanish governor’s house on Place El Makhzen, about two minutes from the kasbah. It is the one hotel here with an outdoor pool and free on-site parking, though spaces are limited, and it has an elevator, a restaurant and mountain views from the better rooms. It rates well for location and is dependable rather than boutique, which suits families and drivers. Ask for a quiet room, because construction at a neighbouring building may cause noise.

The comfort pick inside the old town: Lina Ryad & Spa

For a honeymoon or a restful end to a hiking trip, Lina Ryad & Spa is the most upscale choice, on Rue Moulay Hassan I in the Andalusian quarter. It has large suites, a heated indoor pool described as open all year, a spa with a hammam and a rooftop terrace with mountain views. Remember that you walk the stepped lanes to reach it, so ask the hotel how to handle luggage and parking before you arrive.

On the avenue: Maison D’hôtes Afassi

A fourteen-minute walk from Plaza Uta el-Hammam, this guest house on Avenue Maghreb Arabi offers 16 rooms including triples, quadruples and family rooms, a free local breakfast, a rooftop terrace and free parking nearby. It is the best fit for families, small groups and drivers who prefer an easy arrival, and its guest score is very high.

More small riads in the medina

Riad Rifandalus, Riad Chengli, Dar Almassir and Riad Nila are all two minutes or less from the kasbah, with free breakfast and a rooftop terrace, and Riad Azurite is a calmer pick in the Andalusian quarter about six minutes away. Riad Nila adds a restaurant and a hosted evening meal. None has parking, so they suit travellers arriving by bus or taxi.

Which to choose

Pick Dar Mounir or Vancii if you want the shortest walk and the lowest cost, Parador if you want a pool and parking, Lina Ryad & Spa for a treat, and Afassi for a family or a car. Hikers heading to Akchour will like any of them, and an early start is easiest from the avenue.

When to book

Spring and autumn are the busiest seasons, and weekends fill quickly, so book rooms with mountain views early. Winter is quieter and better value, though pools and terraces are more useful in warm months. Check what your rate includes, particularly breakfast and parking, and confirm arrival arrangements if you come by bus.
