Ephesus & Kuşadası guide

Where to Stay Near Ephesus

A guide to the three bases for visiting Ephesus, Selçuk, Şirince and Kuşadası, with five hotels across budgets and what each area is like.

The area around Ephesus offers three very different bases, and where you sleep shapes the trip. Selçuk is the walkable historic town beside the ruins, Şirince is a quiet hillside village, and Kuşadası is the busy coastal resort with beaches, boats and a harbour. All three are within about half an hour of Ephesus, so the choice is about atmosphere, not distance.

Selçuk: the sightseer's base

Selçuk is small, friendly and full of history. The Ephesus Museum, the Basilica of St John, the Isa Bey Mosque and the Temple of Artemis are all within a short walk, and the ruins of Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary are a short taxi ride away. Restaurants, a weekly market and the railway station are close, and prices are lower than on the coast. Choose Selçuk if you want to walk to sights, start early at Ephesus and keep costs down. Our two picks here are Akay Hotel, a simple hotel with a seasonal pool and rooftop terrace a few minutes from the museum and the mosque, and Hotel Bella, a budget hotel on St John Street with breakfast included and free parking.

Şirince: the quiet village stay

Şirince is about seven or eight kilometres from Selçuk and is best known for its fruit wines, stone houses and slow dinners. Staying overnight gives you the village after the tour buses leave, which is when it is at its best. The trade-offs are steep lanes, higher prices and the need for a car or taxi, since the minibuses are infrequent. Nişanyan Hotel offers restored stone houses and cottages on the hillside, with free breakfast, a restaurant, a garden and parking. It is the choice for couples and for travellers who value atmosphere over convenience.

Kuşadası: beaches, boats and resort comforts

Kuşadası is the largest town in the area, with a marina, a harbour for cruise ships, a bazaar, nightlife and beaches. It is the best base for the boat trips, for families who want a pool and the sea, and for people arriving by cruise ship. Ephesus is about twenty to thirty minutes by car, and tours with hotel pickup are plentiful, including the Pamukkale day trip. Kismet Hotel is a four-star in the centre near the marina, with a seasonal pool, a free breakfast buffet and free parking. For a full resort holiday, Pine Bay Holiday Resort is an all-inclusive property on the coast with a private beach, three outdoor pools, a spa and five restaurants. Note that Expedia lists it as closed in the winter, from early January to early March.

How to choose

If your trip is mostly about ruins and history, pick Selçuk. If it is about romance, food and wine, add a night in Şirince. If you want a beach holiday with day trips, pick Kuşadası. Many travellers split their stay, spending two nights in Selçuk and one in Şirince, or two in Kuşadası and a day trip to Ephesus. If you have a short visit, base in Selçuk and take a taxi to the sights.

Practical tips

Book early for summer and for the weeks around 15 August, when the House of the Virgin Mary draws large crowds. Check whether breakfast, parking and the pool are included, because they vary. If you plan to rent a car, confirm parking, especially in Kuşadası town. Ask for rooms away from busy streets in high season. Finally, compare room categories carefully, since many hotels in this area have a wide range of room sizes, views and amenities.
