Where to Stay in Jaipur

A neighbourhood guide to choosing a Jaipur hotel, from the palace splurge at Rambagh to old-city havelis and a budget favourite, matched to how you want to travel.

Jaipur is a city of contrasts, and where you sleep shapes the trip. The walled Pink City is atmospheric and noisy, the newer districts are calm and spacious, and the palaces sit in their own grounds. Here is how the options break down, with the hotels we recommend.

The old city (Pink City)

Sleeping inside or beside the walls puts you near City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal and the bazaars, so you can walk to breakfast and to your first sight. The trade-off is traffic, horns and narrow lanes, and old buildings can have quirks. Samode Haveli is the standout here: a 225-year-old haveli in a quiet corner of the old city, with painted murals and bougainvillea courtyards, within walking distance of the textile and craft markets. It suits couples, history lovers and anyone who wants atmosphere. Book early for the winter season.

Palace Road and the central districts

The central districts around Palace Road are easier on logistics. ITC Rajputana is a large, haveli-inspired five-star on Palace Road, with 218 rooms and suites, a pool, a spa and five restaurants, including Peshawri. It is close to the airport and a short drive to the old city, and it is the sensible choice for families, business travellers and anyone who values consistent comfort and facilities. You will drive to the sights rather than walk, but cars are inexpensive and plentiful.

Bhawani Singh Road and the palace grounds

For a special stay, Rambagh Palace on Bhawani Singh Road is the one. Built in 1835 as a royal guesthouse and hunting lodge and later the Maharaja's residence, it now has 78 rooms and suites, gardens, pools and a spa, along with four restaurants and a bar. It is not a walk-to-the-bazaars location, but it is about thirty minutes from the airport and a short drive to the old city, and it is where you stay for a honeymoon or milestone trip. Expect the top of the price range.

Sawai Ram Singh Road and the garden havelis

Diggi Palace is a family-run heritage haveli with courtyards and gardens and a more relaxed, informal feel. It sits a short ride from the old city and suits travellers who want character and green space at a mid-range price, including families who value room to move. Read recent reviews and ask for a room that fits your needs, as older properties vary.

Ajmer Road and the budget favourites

Hotel Pearl Palace, on Hari Kishan Somani Marg off Ajmer Road, is a budget hotel with a boutique feel, a popular restaurant with a city view, free station pickup and vintage jeep tours. It is a short ride to the bazaars, it is ideal for independent travellers, and it books up in the high season.

How to choose

Pick the old city and Samode Haveli for atmosphere and walkability, ITC Rajputana for comfort and facilities, Rambagh Palace for a splurge, Diggi Palace for a garden haveli at a fair price and Pearl Palace for value. In every case, book early for October to March, ask about airport and station pickups, and arrange early starts for Amber Fort. Traffic is heavy at rush hour, so allow extra time for transfers, particularly on the way to the airport.

City Palace, JaipurDo

City Palace, Jaipur

The royal complex in the heart of the walled city, still home to the Jaipur royal family. Courtyards, the Peacock Gate and the Sawai Man Singh II Museum make it the best single look at Rajput court life. Pair it with Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal on one walk.

Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds)Do

Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds)

The honeycomb pink facade that defines Jaipur on every postcard. Built in 1799 so royal women could watch street life unseen, it is best photographed from a rooftop cafe across the road in morning light, then explored from inside for a quiet museum and the view.

Amber Fort (Amer)Do

Amber Fort (Amer)

The hilltop palace-fort above Maota Lake that served the Kachwaha rulers before Jaipur existed. Red sandstone, white marble, mirror-lined halls and a ramparts walk with views down the valley. A guided half-day makes sense because the fort is large and signage is thin.
