North Macedonia (Skopje & Ohrid) guide

Where to Stay in Skopje and Ohrid

Which area suits which trip: central Skopje around Macedonia Square, the Old Bazaar edge, Ohrid's old town and its lakefront, with the five hotels we recommend and what each is good for.

Where you sleep matters in both cities because the best sights are walkable and the best evenings are spent outside. The choice comes down to a central Skopje base, then an old-town or lakefront base in Ohrid.

Central Skopje, around Macedonia Square

This is the practical heart of the capital. Macedonia Square, the Stone Bridge, the Memorial House of Mother Teresa and the city museum all sit within a few minutes' walk, and the Old Bazaar is ten minutes on foot across the bridge. It is where most visitors should stay on a first trip. The Skopje Marriott is the splurge: a five-star hotel directly on the square, with an indoor pool, a spa with a Turkish bath and a full restaurant, and it is the one to choose for comfort and a special trip. Hotel Alexandar Square Boutique is the mid-range favourite, about two minutes from the square, with a free breakfast buffet, a terrace and a strong guest rating, and it suits couples and small families.

Centar, a little off the square

The streets around Gjuro Strugar and the city museum keep you in the same walkable zone at lower prices. Best Western Hotel Turist is the value choice here: about two minutes from Mother Teresa House, five from Macedonia Square and seven from the Stone Bridge, with a restaurant, a bar and a terrace. It is a good fit if you plan to spend the day outside and want a central, moderately priced base. Read recent reviews about parking and access if you are driving.

The Old Bazaar edge

The bazaar itself has atmosphere, with grills, tea houses and small guesthouses, but it is noisier at night and hotels there are more limited. If you want evening life on your doorstep, you can stay near it, and otherwise the central hotels above put you ten minutes away.

Ohrid old town

For a first visit, the old town is the best base: the lake, the amphitheatre, the church of St. John at Kaneo, Plaoshnik and Samuel's Fortress are all within a short walk. Villa Varosh is our pick, a small, remodelled guesthouse in the Varosh quarter, about two minutes on foot from the lake and the amphitheatre, with lake-view rooms, a terrace and a garden, and a 10 out of 10 guest rating on Expedia. Be aware that there is no elevator and that nearby bars can be loud late at night in summer.

Ohrid lakefront

If you want a pool, a spa and parking more than a doorstep in the old town, a lakefront resort works well. Inex Gorica Ohrid is about a one-minute walk from the lake, with 125 rooms, an indoor pool, an on-site spa, a restaurant and free parking. The old town and port are a short drive or taxi away. Check which seasonal facilities, such as the beach bar, are open in November.

How to choose

First-timers who want to walk everywhere should take a central hotel in Skopje and an old-town guesthouse in Ohrid. Couples seeking comfort should pair the Marriott with Inex Gorica for its pool and spa. Families will like the space and parking at Inex Gorica and the central, breakfast-inclusive Alexandar Square. Budget travellers will find Hotel Turist and Villa Varosh the best balance of price and location.

Booking tips

Ohrid fills in July and August, so book early for summer, while November offers calm and often better rates. Skopje is steadier all year. Check breakfast, parking and cancellation terms, and confirm any seasonal facilities before you arrive.

Mentioned in this guide

Skopje Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija)Do

Skopje Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija)

The Old Bazaar is the oldest and most atmospheric part of Skopje: a maze of stone lanes on the east bank of the Vardar, lined with Ottoman mosques, hans, hamams, coppersmiths and kebab grills. It is free to wander, easy to reach from the Stone Bridge and the best first afternoon in the capital.

Do

Ohrid Old Town and Samuel's Fortress

Ohrid's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of terracotta roofs, Byzantine churches and lakeside walkways. Climb the Upper Gate to Samuel's Fortress, wander through Plaoshnik and Kaneo, and return along the water. It is the heart of any trip to the lake.

Church of St. John at KaneoDo

Church of St. John at Kaneo

The little church of St. John at Kaneo is Ohrid's most photographed sight, perched on a cliff over Lake Ohrid. Walk to it from the old town through Kaneo's lanes, step inside for the frescoes and stay for the view. It is the best sunset spot on the lake.

Skopje Fortress (Kale)Do

Skopje Fortress (Kale)

Kale, the hilltop fortress above the Old Bazaar, is Skopje's oldest landmark and appears on the city coat of arms. Walk the restored walls for views over the Vardar and the bazaar roofs. It is a short, easy climb and a natural pair with the old town below.
