Riyadh is a desert city, and the time of year shapes almost everything about a visit, from what you can do outdoors to what your hotel costs. The short answer is that the cooler months, from about November to March, are the best time to go. This guide explains the seasons, what each is like, what to plan in each and how to handle the practical rhythms of the week and the day.
Winter, roughly November to March: the best window
Days are warm and sunny, evenings are cool and a light jacket is often welcome after dark, and conditions are comfortable for outdoor sights such as At-Turaif, Wadi Hanifa, the desert and the escarpment. This is also the time when the city’s events programme is at its peak, with Riyadh Season filling the calendar with entertainment zones, concerts and festivals, including Boulevard World. The trade-off is that this is the busiest and most expensive period, so book hotels and key experiences well ahead, and expect crowds at popular evening spots, particularly on weekends.
Spring and autumn: the shoulder months
The weeks around the edges of winter, in March and April and again in October and early November, can be pleasant, with warm days and good evenings, though temperatures climb quickly as summer approaches. These months suit travellers who want a few more options on hotel rates and fewer crowds, but you should plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon. Spring can bring dust and occasional wind, which reduces visibility on the escarpment and in the dunes, and rare rain showers can fill the wadis, so check conditions before a desert trip. A water park or an indoor attraction can be a good plan in the warmer shoulder weeks.
Summer, roughly May to September: for indoor travellers
Summer is very hot, with daytime temperatures often well above what most visitors enjoy, and outdoor sightseeing shifts to the early morning and the late evening. This is the quietest period for tourism, and hotel rates are lower, which can suit travellers who want to focus on museums, malls, cafés and indoor entertainment, such as the National Museum and the Kingdom Centre. Plan any outdoor activity for dawn or after sunset, carry water at all times and wear light, loose clothing and a hat. Evening visits to Diriyah and the financial district can still be enjoyable, as the heat eases after dark, though it stays warm.
Riyadh Season and the event calendar
Riyadh Season is a winter entertainment programme that typically begins in the autumn and runs through the cooler months. It brings themed zones, shows, sports and food, and it is the reason the city feels so lively at that time of year. Dates and the programme change from year to year, so check before you travel, and buy tickets through the season’s ticket seller. If you want the festival atmosphere, plan for the middle of winter, and if you prefer a quieter city, aim for the shoulder months.
The week and the day
The Saudi weekend is Friday and Saturday, so Fridays can be quiet in the morning and then busy in the afternoon and evening, and weekends are the busiest time at attractions and restaurants. Short pauses around prayer times are normal, so check opening hours and plan flexibly. In any season, the best rhythm is to sightsee in the morning, rest in the heat of the afternoon and head out again in the late afternoon and evening, when the light is softer and the city comes alive.
Practical planning
Dress modestly in any season, in loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and carry a light layer for air-conditioned interiors, which can be very cold. Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat matter all year. Check the Visit Saudi portal and your government’s current travel advice before booking, since entry rules and advisories change. Book flights and hotels early for the main winter months, and allow extra time for traffic around events.
Our suggestion
For a first visit, go between late November and early March. You will get the best weather for the desert and the heritage sites, the liveliest events calendar and the most comfortable evenings at Bujairi Terrace and the Sky Bridge. If your dates are fixed in summer, plan around indoor sights and evening outings, and book a hotel with a good pool, such as the Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons, so that the heat of the afternoon is part of the holiday rather than a problem.
