Where to Stay in Zagreb

How to choose your base in Zagreb, from the Orient Express-era Esplanade and an Art Nouveau palace on Strossmayer Square to a classic hotel on Ban Jelačić Square, a modern Canopy by Hilton and a value three-star opposite the station.

Zagreb is compact, and almost every hotel worth considering lies within a twenty-minute walk of Ban Jelačić Square. The real choice is between three zones: the main square itself, the green Lower Town squares of the Lenuci Horseshoe, and the streets around the main railway station. The Upper Town is mostly residential and has few hotels, so most visitors stay below and ride the funicular up.

Ban Jelačić Square: for first-timers and Advent

Nothing beats waking up on the main square. Hotel Dubrovnik has stood on its corner since 1929, with 214 rooms and 8 suites, the historic Kavana Dubrovnik café and a steak house. Dolac market, the cathedral, Zagreb 360 and the funicular are all within ten minutes on foot, and from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027 the square is at the heart of Advent. Rooms on the Gajeva side are quieter.

Strossmayer Square and Zrinjevac: for character

The Lenuci Horseshoe is Zagreb at its most elegant, a chain of parks lined with Habsburg-era buildings and museums. The Palace Hotel, in an Art Nouveau palace of 1891 that has been a hotel since 1907, faces the gardens of Strossmayer Square, five minutes from the main square. Its frescoed café serves štrukli, courtyard rooms are quiet, and secured parking is a bonus. The Zrinjevac meeting point for the Plitvice and Slovenia tours is around the corner.

By the main station: for a splurge

At the southern end of the parks, the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel opened in 1925 for travellers on the Orient Express and reopened after a complete renovation in 2004. With 208 rooms, the Oleander Terrace, fine dining, a health club and valet parking, it is our featured pick for a special trip, and a wonderful base for a festive December break.

East of the station: for modern style

Canopy by Hilton Zagreb City Centre, on Kneza Branimira, brings contemporary design, 151 rooms, a restaurant cooking with Dolac produce, a fitness centre, covered parking and pet-friendly rooms. The main square is fifteen to twenty minutes on foot or a short tram ride.

Opposite the station: for value and early starts

Hotel Central is a dependable three-star directly across from the main railway station, with free buffet breakfast and Wi-Fi and a tram stop on the doorstep. It is ideal for budget travellers, rail passengers and anyone heading off on early day tours.

Matching base to trip

For a celebration, the Esplanade. For history at a fair price, the Palace. For the main square and Advent on your doorstep, Hotel Dubrovnik. For modern comfort and parking, the Canopy. For the tightest budget and the earliest trains, Hotel Central.

Practical tips

The centre has a large pedestrian zone and parking is limited and expensive, so if you drive, choose the Palace, the Canopy, the Esplanade or Hotel Central and reserve a space. Breakfast is often charged separately, so compare rates carefully. Prices rise on Advent weekends and during big congresses, while January after the holidays is one of the best-value times of year.
