AlUla’s hotels are spread across the valley and the town, and the right choice depends more on atmosphere and budget than on distance, because nearly everything is a twenty to thirty minute drive. There is no real transport network, so choose a base that suits how you plan to travel.
Ashar Valley for luxury and quiet
Ashar Valley is home to Maraya and several of the area’s best-known stays. Banyan Tree AlUla is the splurge, with private-pool villas, Thai and local dining, a spa and a natural rock pool for adult guests, three minutes from Maraya and about sixteen kilometres from Hegra. Caravan by Habitas AlUla sits in the same valley and offers a more informal stay in Airstream caravans with private decks, food trucks and an outdoor cinema. Both suit couples who want the landscape on their doorstep, and both are best with a rental car or a hired driver for outings. Expect the highest rates of the year from late autumn to early spring.
Old Town for atmosphere
Dar Tantora The House Hotel is the only stay inside the historic quarter, with thirty restored mud-brick units, Joontos for modern Saudi dining and an outdoor pool. The lanes, shops and cafés are on your doorstep, Dadan is about nine minutes away and Hegra about twenty-three. The compromise is that Old Town is pedestrian only, so you park at the South Parking and use a buggy service. It is the best base for a first visit if you like to walk to dinner and have a car for the day tours.
The town edge for value and families
Shaden Resort AlUla, managed by Accor, is a four-star resort on Hail Street, about five kilometres from town and the Elephant Rock area. It has a pool, a spa, several restaurants and a choice of rooms, suites and villas, which makes it the dependable mid-range option for families. Cloud 7 Residence AlUla in AlAziziyah is the value pick, with 300 bungalows that have kitchenettes and terraces, an outdoor pool and free parking, about fifteen minutes from Old Town.
How to choose
For a honeymoon or a milestone trip, choose Banyan Tree. For a design-led, informal stay, choose Caravan by Habitas. For heritage, choose Dar Tantora. For families and groups, choose Shaden Resort, and for budget and self-catering, choose Cloud 7 Residence.
Good to know
Winter is the busy season, and the festival weeks fill up quickly, so book as early as you can. Nights between December and February can be cold, so ask about heating and blankets in tented, caravan or older heritage rooms. Check what is included, especially breakfast, and ask your hotel about tour pickup, because Hegra and Dadan tours start from a meeting point and some hotels arrange transfers.
A note on transport
Without a car, you depend on taxis, the ride-share app and tour pickups. If you are not renting, choose a hotel that arranges transfers and book your tours with pickup. If you are renting, parking is free or complimentary at most of these hotels.
