Kochi is the natural hub for Kerala, with an airport, a railway network and a good spread of hotels, and many visitors ask what they can see on day trips. The honest answer is that some places work well in a day and others are better with an overnight stay, because Kerala roads are slow and the best experiences start early or end late. This guide ranks the options by how well they work from Kochi, with suggestions for when to stay overnight instead.
Alleppey backwaters: the best day trip
Alleppey, also called Alappuzha, is the classic backwater destination, and it is one of the closest to Kochi, with a drive of roughly an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic. A day trip lets you board a boat in the morning, drift through palm-lined canals and village life, eat a local lunch on board and return by evening. The houseboat cruise we recommend is a 21-hour trip, so if you want the full overnight experience, keep a night free rather than trying to rush it into a day. A day cruise is still a good taste, and stays well within a normal Kochi plan.
Kumarakom: birds and lake views
Kumarakom sits on Vembanad Lake, further south than Alleppey, and the road from Kochi takes about two hours, with the airport transfer to some resorts shown as more than two hours. It works as a day trip if your focus is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and a lake cruise. Kerala Tourism names June to August as the ideal time for the sanctuary, but a winter visit also brings migratory birds, so the morning is the time to go. For a slower stay, book a night at Coconut Lagoon or Kumarakom Lake Resort and treat Kumarakom as a destination, with canoeing, cycling and bird walks instead of a single day tour.
Munnar: a very long day, better as an overnight
Munnar is the tea hill station of Kerala and the main reason to head inland, but it is a long drive of around four hours or more each way from Kochi, on steepening roads with slow stretches behind trucks and buses. As a single day trip it is possible but tiring, and you spend more time in the car than on the hills. A far better plan is to stay at least two nights, with a morning on the tea trail walk and factory visit, a trip to Eravikulam National Park for the high grasslands and the Nilgiri tahr, and a half day at Anakulam for the wild elephant and village jeep tour. Remember that Eravikulam closes in February and March every year, and bring a warm layer for the evenings.
Anakulam elephant villages
Anakulam is in the hills near Munnar, and the jeep tour takes you into forest and village landscapes where wild elephants sometimes come down to the water. It works best as part of a Munnar stay rather than as a standalone trip from Kochi, because the transfer eats most of the day. Sightings are never guaranteed, so treat the elephants as a bonus, and enjoy the village scenes, forest views and tea slopes along the way. Dress in muted colours and bring insect repellent.
Thekkady and Periyar: too far for a day
Periyar Tiger Reserve and the lake at Thekkady are best seen with a stay of one or two nights. The lake boats leave at set times from early morning, and you must arrive early at the landing to board. A day trip from Kochi would mean a very long drive for a single boat ride. Stay at Spice Village or a similar property within walking distance of the park and take the first boat.
Within Kochi itself
If you do not want a long drive, stay in the city and use the harbour. The Fort Kochi heritage walk, Mattancherry Palace and the Chinese fishing nets fill a full day, and the food walk and Kathakali show fill the evening. Our two-day guide shows how to arrange this.
Practical advice
Hire a car with a driver for any day trip, because driving yourself on busy Kerala roads is stressful and a driver knows the stops. Start early, carry water and snacks, and confirm return times with your hotel before you leave. Check the weather in the monsoon months, when rain can slow roads and disrupt hill travel. If your time is short, choose the backwaters, and if you have more time, choose Munnar as an overnight rather than a day.
