Where to Stay in Kerala

Where to base yourself in Kerala, from the heritage lanes of Mattancherry to a lakeside resort in Kumarakom, tea country in Munnar, a cottage stay near Periyar and a quiet resort in Varkala.

Kerala works best as a chain of short stays rather than one base, because the distances are long and each region has its own character. Our five hotels each anchor one stop on the classic route, from heritage Kochi to the beach at Varkala, so you can mix and match depending on your days.

Fort Kochi and Mattancherry

For history, stay in the old quarter. Xandari Harbour Fort Kochi is on Bazaar Road in Mattancherry, with Mattancherry Palace about 13 minutes on foot and the Spice Market about 14 minutes, a pool, a garden and a library. The rooms range from compact Spice Rooms to larger harbour suites, so choose a suite if space matters. Fort Kochi’s churches and the Chinese fishing nets are a short tuk-tuk ride away. It is about 91 minutes by road from Cochin International Airport.

Kumarakom and the backwaters

For a slow stay on the water, choose Coconut Lagoon, our splurge. It sits in Kumarakom with the backwaters two minutes on foot, heritage bungalows and mansions, a pool, a spa and canoeing and cycling. The airport is about 141 minutes away, so use it as a destination rather than a stopover. Add a houseboat night in Alleppey if you want the classic cruise, and a morning at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.

Munnar

For tea country, Glenmore Resorts at Pallivasal is our budget pick, with valley and plantation views and breakfast included. Reviews shown are mostly older, and the approach road is steep and unpaved, with a jeep provided for pick-up, so confirm details before you book. The tea trail walk, Eravikulam National Park and Anakulam jeep tour all work from here. Bring a warm layer, because evenings are cool.

Thekkady

For wildlife, Spice Village is the obvious choice, with 52 cottages, two restaurants, a pool and Periyar National Park about ten minutes on foot. That makes the first boat of the morning easy to catch, and the hotel can help with treks and spice-garden visits. Book early in the main season.

Varkala

For beach days, Gateway Varkala is a quieter resort about a 14-minute walk from the cliff, with a pool, a spa, tennis and sea-view rooms. Staying away from the cliff path means quieter nights, with the cafes and sunsets still close. Swim only in guarded areas and avoid the sea in the monsoon.

Where not to stay

Avoid trying to see everything from one base. Fort Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Varkala are each many hours apart by road, so a day trip from one to another costs most of the day in a car. If you want a shorter trip, pick two or three of the stops and give each at least two nights, which leaves time for the walks, boat rides and slow meals that make Kerala rewarding.

How to choose

For one splurge, make it Coconut Lagoon. For heritage and walkability, choose Xandari Harbour. For wildlife, choose Spice Village. For the beach, choose Gateway Varkala. For the lowest price, choose Glenmore. Build the trip as a line down the state, with two or three nights in each stop.
