Where you sleep in Luxor and Aswan shapes your days, because the best sightseeing happens at dawn and the middle of the day is for resting. Think about early starts, river views and how much you want to walk. Here is how the main areas compare.
Luxor East Bank: the city
The East Bank is the lively side, with Luxor Temple, the souk, the Corniche, restaurants and the station, and Karnak a short ride north. Staying near Luxor Temple means you can walk to dinner and see the temple floodlit, and the Nefertiti Hotel, a minute from the temple, is our budget pick. The trade-off is street noise and some touts, and a ferry or taxi ride to the West Bank each morning.
New Karnak: resort comfort
North of the centre, near Karnak, you find large Nile resorts with pools and spas. The Hilton Luxor Resort and Spa sits here, about a kilometre from Karnak and a few kilometres from Luxor Temple. It suits families and anyone who wants a pool after a hot day, and it offers an easy start for Karnak. It is less walkable to restaurants and cafes, so expect to use taxis in the evening.
West Bank: quiet and close to the tombs
The West Bank is rural, with fields, palms and small villages, and it puts you near the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the balloon launch sites. Al Moudira, an antique-filled courtyard hotel, is our splurge pick here, usually open from September to June. Staying on this side gives you easy dawn starts and a peaceful atmosphere, but fewer evening options and a ferry or taxi trip for Karnak and Luxor Temple.
Aswan Corniche: river and islands
In Aswan, most hotels line the Corniche, with Nile views and the islands opposite. The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract is the grand choice, with a terrace, an infinity pool and a spa, about five minutes from the Elephantine Island landing. The Basma Hotel, opposite the Nubian Museum, is the mid-range alternative, with a pool, a free breakfast and river-view rooms. Both are close to the felucca moorings, the souk and the Unfinished Obelisk, and both can arrange early departures to Abu Simbel.
A note on closures
The historic Sofitel Winter Palace in Luxor is closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen in 2027 under new management, so it is not on our list. Always check that a hotel is open for your dates, as some boutique properties close in summer.
Choosing by trip type
For couples, choose Al Moudira or the Old Cataract. For families, the Hilton Luxor or Basma. For budget and walkability, the Nefertiti. If you plan a Nile cruise, you can combine a night or two in a hotel at each end. Book early for the busy winter season, ask about breakfast boxes for early tours, and request a river-view room where the view matters.
